Production company Ndapunikwa Investments continues to celebrate the numerous accolades for Namibia’s best narrative film awardee, ‘Hairareb’.
‘Hairareb’, a movie that tells the tale of love during a time of devastating drought in Namibia, recently featured as the closing film at the NAM! Helsinki Namibian Film Festival in Finland. The festival was organised by the Finnish Namibia Society and sponsored by the Namibia Film Commission. It has also been selected for screening at the 30th Annual Pan African Film Festival (PAFF), scheduled for 19 April to 1 May 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Since its inception in 1992, PAFF has been a beacon of culture, inspiration and creative advancement for the Black storyteller. Each year, PAFF screens over 150 new Black films from the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, the South Pacific, Europe, Canada and Asia, made by or about people of African descent. ‘Hairareb’ and its executive producer Dantagos Jimmy-Melani also recently received a nomination in the Best Movie (Southern Africa) category of the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) hosted by Africa Magic, in association with MultiChoice.
All Namibian and African fans of the film are urged to vote for ‘Hairareb’ asthe Best Movie (Southern Africa). Voting closes on Friday, 29 April 2022. ‘Hairareb’has already achieved a number of accolades, including Best Narrative Film, Best Director, and the Best Male Actor Award for the late veteran actor David Ndjavera at the Namibian Theatre and Film Awards. The flick has also garnered international acclaim, featuring in numerous prestigious international film festivals as an official selection, including the European Film Festival and the Durban International Film Festival. ‘Hairareb’is a two-time Official 2021 Dikalo Award Winner, receiving a Best Actress Award for Hazel Hinda. It received a Special Mention from the Jury for Feature-Length Fiction at the Cannes Film Festival in France, and had the distinct honour of opening the festival on the evening of 19 October 2021. Hinda further collected a second award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for ‘Hairareb’at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in Lagos, Nigeria in 2021, where the film was nominated in seven categories.
The film is based on a book by August C. Bikeur, previously performed as a radio play in the Damara/Nama language, and later developed into a script by Aina Ligola Kwedhi.
